ELIZABETH ORLEANS

Elizabeth N. Orleans (b. Philadelphia, PA.) earned her MFA at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, CA and her BFA in ceramics at Tulane University in New Orleans, LA. She has also studied at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, Clayworks in Santa Fe, Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina, the Oregon School of Art and Craft in Portland and the Studio Art Centers International in Florence, Italy.

In the tradition of Southern California ceramic artists Ken Price and Peter Voulkos, Orleans continues to pursue innovation in her chosen medium. Her collisions of geometric and organic forms, often referencing growth, the human body, and abstracted life forms, have drawn comparisons to the work of artists Yayoi Kusama and Louise Bourgeois. She also furthers her interest in altering pre-existing spaces by creating architectural interventions that penetrate boundaries and explore movement, change, and the infinite possibility of time.

EXCERPT FROM: Elizabeth Orleans Feature

All of my art work is original as my unique style comes from within me and is all sculpted with my hands. I have developed my own language of shapes but have found that other artists in history think alike or come up with similar forms to each other. The outward shapes arose out of a yearning to shrink down and run around inside of my sculptures. I created 'Internal View' which gave the viewer a life size experience of walking through one of my pieces. This work visually grew out of the walls and dripped off of the ceiling.
